THE DANUBE CYCLE PATH – CYCLE ALONG THIS BIKE PATH JUST A FEW METERS FROM ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREAT RIVERS, THE DANUBE Cycling the Danube Cycle Path includes staying in towns with downtown squares that have changed little in hundreds of years. It is about riding beside countryside that belongs on a postcard. Starting in Passau, the historic city of three rivers, your biking adventure will take you east following the flow of the Danube. The route is entirely flat and takes place on good, asphalt bike paths. The unparalleled beauty of the region's alpine and water landscape has kept this tour a classic among cyclists year after year. The journey begins in the picturesque town of Passau, located in Germany just across the Austrian border. Passau's romantic river setting comes from its fortunate location right at the confluence of three rivers: the Danube, Inn and Ilz. You'll cycle on the 238 Kilometers long Upper Austrian section of the Danube Cycle Path along the river and pass the Monastery of Engelhartszell through the famous Schlögener Schlinge. Then, you'll continue to the capital of Upper Austria, Linz. The city's quaint historical center boasts some great examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. The tour continues through meadows and forests to the quaint village of Grein where you can visit the oldest theater in Austria. In St. Nikola, the Danube reaches its deepest point at 13 meters. In Lower Austria, the Danube Cycle Path has 258 kilometers. The marsh woodland in Machland follows the Strudengau with its numerous palaces and castles. You'll cycle through the Strudengau, an untouched part of the Danube, passing the village of pilgrimage Maria Taferl and reach Melk with its gorgeous Baroque Benedictine monastery. Stretching along the Danube from Melk to Krems is a small region known as the Wachau. Well known for its wine, it also has gained prominence for its picturesque apricot orchards hugging the shores of the river. The path crosses the plain of Tulln until it reaches Vienna. Here you’ll enter the new Danube National Park and will encounter numerous traces of the Roman past, near Carnuntum. Vienna, with its history as a former Imperial capital, has many palatial landmarks dotting its horizon. One grandiose example is the Schönbrunn Palace, whose architect initially sought to have it exceed Versailles in splendor. Used by the Habsburgs as a summer residence, the palace is set within an enchanting park. Quiet bike paths and side roads will lead you further to Bratislava.
