The Swiss Engadine Valley boasts steep mountains, rocky side valleys, glittering peaks, lush green pastures, high elevation plateaus, marshlands, and mountain lakes. Explore unspoiled nature in abundance between the renowned holiday resorts of St. Moritz, Pontresina and Scuol. The River Inn, just as the Inn Cycle Path, has its source here, high in the Swiss Alps on Maloja Pass before making its way out of Switzerland into Austria and on into Germany.
In Finstermuenz you leave Switzerland behind and enter Austria’s most mountainous Province of the Tyrol. Typical Tyrolean villages and towns like Landeck, Imst, and Roppen are soon encountered as you continue cycling along the path to Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol. Encircled by the most glorious mountain scenery you can imagine, Innsbruck offers the best of both worlds - the urban sophistication of a historic town and an Alpine playground. The path then continues past the worthwhile towns of Stans, Schwaz, Brixlegg, and Kramsach.
Passing Woergl and Kirchbichl, you reach the small town of Kufstein with its impressive fortress. Here, the valley widens considerably as you leave mountain ranges behind and enter Germany. The Bavarian villages, though similar to those in Tirol, have a distinct character of their own. You cycle through pretty villages such as Wasserburg, the pilgrimage town of Altoetting, Burghausen, and Bad Fuessing.
Braunau is the first historic small town by the River Inn you’ll encounter in Upper Austria. The path then travels across the Lower Inn European Nature Preserve, an area of awesome natural beauty and a unique natural habitat area for birds. The ride continues through quaint little towns such as Obernberg and Reichersberg with its Monastery. The Baroque Town of Schaerding is another highlight before reaching the end of the route: Passau in Germany, the fascinating town where the Inn drains into the Danube.
