The sun-drenched Neusiedler See Lake Region, home to the Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park, is one of those slightly different destinations waiting to be explored. Its network of eleven waymarked cycle paths is more than 500 kilometers in length and extends out into virtually every nook and cranny of the area that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Region in 2001. An excursion from the seat of a bike isn’t merely a physical challenge – it’s also your key to a fascinating voyage of discovery through this enchanting province, and even into Hungary. In addition, because this scenic area boasts 2,000 sunny hours and 300 sunny days a year, it is noted for being among the sunniest regions of Austria and every bike trip you take here turns into a most enjoyable adventure.
The bicycle is by far the best way of exploring this peaceful countryside and hitting upon the trails of its hidden natural and cultural treasures. Criss-crossed by a stunning network of family routes, the main trail of the Neusiedler See Lake Area is the Neusiedler See Cycle Path (B10). In 2007, the path was equipped with new rest stops in contemporary design. The 132 kilometers long Neusiedler See Cycle Path travels round the lake, for 94 kilometers on Austrian territory and for 38 kilometers on Hungarian territory. Those seeking something a little more relaxing can opt for a shorter, 82 kilometers long route and make use of the bicycle ferry boats that operate between Illmitz and Moerbisch. Cyclists can start the tour at any of the 14 tourist resorts along the B10 Neusiedler See Cycle Path.
Apart from the Neusiedler See Cycle Path (B10, 132km), cyclists can explore the lovely Neusiedler See Lake Area on magnificent cycle routes: Anniversary Cycle Path (R1), Cherry Blossom Cycle Trail (B12, 43km), Lacken Cycle Trail (B20, 48km), Hanság Cycle Path (B22, 53km), Cultural Cycle Trail (B23, 26km), Lange Lacke Cycle Path (B27, 14km), Kogl Link Trail (B13, 21km and B31, 16km), Danube Cycle Path Link Trail (B21, 31km), and the B24 (16km) and B26 (48km) Link Trails.
SPECIAL RECOMMENDATION: The Neusiedler See Card (available for free with over 730 local lodging properties!) is valid from early April through late October and entitles holders to free admission at outdoor and indoor swimming pools, museums, amusement parks and to free rides on local public transportation.
