Mühlviertel Cycle Trail

Panoramas of the granite highlands

The hilly landscape of the Mühlviertel region features unique granite formations, unspoilt valleys and notable cultural jewels. This trail is a good choice for those who want a bit of a challenge, as you will need a decent level of fitness. Your efforts will be rewarded with fantastic views of the Alps and unforgettable impressions.

This trail is a challenge from the very start. However, after the first climb from Kramesau out of the Danube Valley to Neustift, you can enjoy the rolling hills and valleys.

In the heights of the Bohemian Forest awaits one of the jewels of the Mühlviertel: the Premonstratensian abbey of Stift Schlägl, home to Austria’s only abbey brewery. The wonderful panoramic view of the famous artificial lake from the Moldaublick viewpoint is breathtaking. Not far away, in the little village of Haslach, you will find a mechanical sound factory and unique exhibits in the Museum of Rural Life, Commerce and Weaving in the old defensive tower.

The trail leads eastward along the border back to Bad Leonfelden. Why not stop off at Kastners Lebzeltarium to try some Lebkuchen gingerbread? Or discover the centre of the rural reverse glass painting tradition in the village of Sandl. These glass panels are still painted with simple Christian motives and are famous throughout the world. The trail continues through the highlands and the Tanner Moor in Liebenau to the border with Lower Austrian and back to the Danube and Grein.
