Lake Neusiedl Cycle Trail
Cycling the sunny side of Austria
Casual cyclists and families will find the perfect trail around Lake Neusiedl for discovering and enjoying the spectacular landscape and culinary delights. Central Europe’s westernmost endorheic basin constitutes the centre of the circuit. The family-friendly trail leads through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lake Neusiedl, along the reeds on the water’s edge, past vineyards, wetlands and salt marshes.
The Lake Neusiedl Cycle Trail has been given 5 stars by the ADFC and is one of the most popular trails in the region. It leads from Neusiedl am See to Weiden on the east of the lake and through Lake Neusiedl – Seewinkel National Park. The landscape of the Seewinkel appears never to end. From the open border with Hungary in Pamhagen, the trail leads via Fertöd Hidegség and Balf to Fertörákos, where finds its way back to Austrian soil.
A range of cultural and culinary surprises make the west side of the sea a real one-off: You can discover Mörbisch am See, which is famous for its lakeside concerts and alleyways, the historic little free town of Rust, which is where the TV series “Winzerkönig” is filmed, and Oggau am See, which has cultivated red wine for longer than any other community in Austria. It is also worth visiting Donnerskirchen, where the church nestles into the slopes of the Leitha Mountains, and the Genussakademie Burgenland, which offers food, drink and wine tastings. In Purbach am See, Breitenbrunn am See and Winden am See are full of well-preserved old Kellergassen – lanes that lead past wine cellars – most of which are still used today. The trail leads back to the district capital Neusiedl am See via Jois to finish the circuit of this interesting culinary and scenic cycle tour through the east of Austria.
Look out for the designer cycle rest areas along the trail. Their stylish sails and reed cupolas provide shade and protection from the wind. A large number of viewing towers provide a phenomenal view over Lake Neusiedl to the Hungarian plain.
