Cycling through the world of mountains and water

The River Enns Cycle Trail is a challenging, interesting trail that takes nature-lovers through the Austrian federal states of Salzburg, Styria and Upper Austria. This hilly tour features several climbs and requires you to meet a few challenges. Imposing mountains, such as the Dachstein, romantic valleys, rushing torrents, sleepy villages and historic towns, such as Radstadt, Schladming and Steyr, are your companions through the unique natural backdrop between the Dachstein and the Schladminger Tauern, the Gesäuse and the Reichramiger Hintergebirge. It’s an ideal route for athletic bikers.

The River Enns Cycle Trail is without doubt one of the most scenically beautiful cycle trails in the Alps. In the first section you will be astounded by the many facets of the high-altitude Alpine world, while on the second section the main feature is the ever-calmer Enns.

The trail begins in the state of Salzburg at 1,026 metres above sea level in Flachauwinkl at the foot of the Niedere Tauern. The trail passes the imposing Grimming in the Schladming-Dachstein region and on past Schloss Trautenfels to the Benedictine abbey of Stift Admont, which presents cyclists with the largest monastic library in the world and the gateway to the Gesäuse National Park. This is perhaps the most spectacular section of the Enns, as this is where the raging river carves its way through the national park.

The attractive scenic route to the Enns Valley option leads over the Buchauer Sattel and through the less rugged, more densely forested mountains of the romantic Reichramiger Hintergebirge in the heart of the Limestone Alps National Park. The trail continues through St. Gallen, where a trip to the water park is recommended, and on via Steyr to the oldest town in Austria, Enns. The River Enns Cycle Trail provides the ideal link to the River Danube Cycle Trail, Europe’s most famous cycle trail, and the River Mur Cycle Trail, which leads on to Bad Radkersburg in the Thermen- & Vulkanland.
