Ybbs Valley Cycle Trail
107 km
A river cycle tour through Perry Country
Through the land of pear trees and perry, then on through the Eisenstraße region: on its way along the River Ybbs, the Ybbs Valley Cycle Trail connects the mild and wild sides of perry country. In the lower reaches of the Ybbs, the rolling hills of the Moststraße (Perry Route) open up with its lovely patchwork of enchanting villages, huge traditional farm buildings, sprawling fields and flowering grazed orchards. In the upper reaches, the trail reaches the Eisenstraße (Iron Route), a raw, Alpine region of narrow valleys, high peaks and many relics of a once-dominant local iron industry.
The start of the trail in Ybbs begins with a few climbs. On the way towards Amstetten there is a short climb that rewards cyclists with a magnificent view of the plateau to the north.
The further the Ybbs Valley Cycle Trail leads towards wild Perry Country, the more natural and spectacular it becomes. In the new key section between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See, the trail leads along the tracks of the old Ybbstalbahn railway track, which was known locally as the “Sheep’s Cheese Express”. This section of the trail is a total work of art made up of an elegant route and spectacular scenery. It leads across picturesque spectacular lenticular truss bridges through a tunnel, crosses a romantic gorge and heads back down to peaceful sandbanks, where you can enjoy the crystal-clear waters and sun.
At the end of the trail is Lunzer See, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Eastern Alps. Cyclists can look forward to beautiful spots to relax, swim, take a boat ride or experience culture on the award-winning lake stage.
Those who haven’t cycled enough yet can complete their river circuit to the Danube via the Erlauftal Cycle Path (formerly the Ötscherland route) or its shorter version (formerly the Meridian route from Wieselburg – Kienberg/Gaming).
