Tauern Cycle Trail

310 km

A culinary tour from waterfalls to Mozart’s home town

The start of this trail couldn’t be any more spectacular: it begins where the Krimmler Waterfalls, the highest in Central Europe, crash down into the depths below. This offers not only a captivating natural phenomenon, but the refreshing coolness of the spray from the waterfall. But there’s no lack of cultural and culinary diversity on this trail as unique highlights await in Mozart’s home town of Salzburg and on the Via Culinaria.

Once you’ve discovered all the Krimmler waterfalls, the trail follows the waters of the Salzach along the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park and past a wonderful mountain backdrop. A visit to the National Park Centre in Mittersill and the new Tauern Spa in Kaprun should be fixtures in your tour plan.

The artificial lakes of the Glockner-Kaprun and the Großglockner are also worth a visit. From these lakes, the leisurely trail continues onwards to the power station on the Salzach in the Pongau region. In recent years, many cycle trails have been created to pass sights such as the wild, romantic Liechtensteinklamm, der Eisriesenwelt – the largest closed ice cave in the world, and Hohenwerfen Castle.

After these highlights, you reach the town of Hallein, famous for its Celtic history and salt mining. You can visit one of the best salt mines and an exciting slide into its very centre. The fortress of Hohensalzburg can be seen from afar. It looks down over the large squares and twisting alleys of Salzburg Old Town. The best view for cyclists is definitely directly from the cycle trail along the Salzach. This can be enjoyed by those who choose the option that leads through the Salzach Valley. This allows you to reach Mozart’s home town via an entirely reconstructed cycle trail that leads through Saalfelden and Lofer. You should definitely leave enough time to discover the cultural and historical highlights of Salzburg. The route continues through the peaceful floodplains of the Salzach and Inn, on the banks of which lie the old market town of Oberndorf, the Gothic town of Braunau, the thousand-year-old castle of Obernberg and the Augustine Abbey of Reichersberg, towards Passau.

We recommend the Tauern Cycle Trail Circuit: The 270 km circuit is a great way to discover the region. Discover over 100 natural phenomena and countless excursion destinations on the trail’s seven stages.
