Roman Cycle Trail

Travel back to Roman times on your bike

Bavaria and Upper Austria have many historical, traditional and cultural bonds – but one unique feature is without doubt the family-friendly Roman Cycle Trail, which recollects the time of Julius Caesar. The trail passes a number of excavation sites and interesting information boards, which tell of Roman times. It passes through Passau and the Innviertel, to the waters of the Attersee and Wels to Enns along the River Danube

Passau, where three rivers converge, is the historic starting point of the Roman Cycle Trail. From here the trail leads along the Bavarian side of the River Inn upstream to Ering-Frauenstein power station.

While in the Innviertel region of Upper Austria, it is worth visiting the Roman Museum in Altheim. It’s a great place to find out more about the empire. Health also plays an important role on this cycle trail: there are a number of Kneipp hydrotherapy areas along the route, where you can cool off and invigorate yourself. The trail then leads through the rolling Alpine foothills via Waldzell to Vöcklabruck, Schwanenstadt and Lambach.

Then comes the historic little town of Wels, which during Roman times was known as Ovilava and was the main civilian town in the area that is now modern Austria. The trail then continues along the Traun via Nettingsdorf and St. Florian and finishes in Enns, Austria’s oldest town. The Romans have also left their mark here: the town was once a legion garrison and known as Lauriacum.
