EuroVelo 9
Through the heart of Europe on the EuroVelo
The 1930 km long European long-distance cycle trail EuroVelo 9 will soon connect the Baltic and the Adriatic. As part of this trail, the section from South Moravia to Austria and on to Slovenia is a tour through history and good living from Breclav to Maribor. Romantic vineyards and Kellergassen (lanes that lead past wine cellars) historical towns and numerous thermal spas can be found on the way and invite cyclists to relax and enjoy their tour.
A ride on the EuroVelo 9 guarantees an active holiday and plenty of opportunities to enjoy food and drink. You should definitely take your time! The EuroVelo 9 leads through Lower Austria to Vienna – the trail through the Wine District, which is also known as the Bernsteinradweg (Amber Cycle Trail) – is great for little excursions. It’s definitely worth visiting the lanes that lead past the wine cellars. Once in Vienna the cycle trail leads on via the 150-year-old Ringstaße past the Town Hall, Austrian National Theatre, Parliament, Hofburg and the State Opera, offering the very best in cultural enjoyment. The eastern edge of the Vienna Woods, is home to vineyards and wine taverns such as that in Gumpoldskirchen. It is also home to the historical town of Baden, which is famous for its Roman baths and is the last stop before the trail hits the Vienna Alps. The trail then passes the Linsberg Asia thermal spa before heading uphill towards Mönichkirchen. If you want to skip the ascent, you can travel in comfort with the bike shuttle run by the Taxi- und Reisedienstes Andreas Graf up to the highest point of EuroVelo 9.
As soon as you have passed the border between Lower Austria and Styria, you are in the relaxing world of Eastern Styria and the Thermen- & Vulkanland. Eastern Styria and the historic town of Hartberg is lovingly called the garden of Austria due to its product variety and high quality of produce. There are also a large number of thermal spas, such as the H2O Therme Sebersdorf, the Heiltherme Bad Waltersdorf, the Rogner Bad Blumau, the Therme Loipersdorf and the Parktherme Bad Radkersburg. If you’re looking to experience Styrian hospitality, the numerous wine taverns in the vineyards along this section of the trail offer a wealth of unique and typical delicacies. It’s a chance to taste pure pleasure. From Bad Radkersburg in the Thermen & Vulkanland the trail continues upstream for a while on the River Mur Cycle Trail before branching off south toward Slovenia by Spielfeld/Sentilj and continuing to Maribor.
