Wine culture in Vulkanland
The best of wine and castles
The castle of Schloss Kapfenstein, which lies in Styrian Spa Country and Styrian Volcanic Country promises a wonderful view. It lies in a beautiful location on EuroVelo 9 and the Styrian Wine Country Cycle Trail. From here you have a view of the enchanting landscape of the border triangle Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. Those who feel like regional cuisine will find numerous delicacies in the castle restaurant.
The castle and lands have been owned by the Winkler-Hermaden family since 1918. The castle is said to have been built around 1132 and offers an impressive view of the southeast of Austria, and as far as Hungary and Slovenia. Speaking of distant views, the name Kapfenstein is derived from the Middle High German word for “spy” (“kaphen”). Kapfenstein essentially means “the stone with the view”.
In addition to the castle, there is also an attractive excursion destination: The current owners of the Winkler-Hermaden vineyard are the third generation to run it and offer a wide range of high-quality red, white and other wines. Exhibitions and event openings take place in the wine cellar – as do tastings of the fine wines. A tip for foodies: Delicious picnics with a wide range of treats from the Hotel Restaurant Schloss Kapfenstein will tempt you to stick around and catch the run among the vines. Visitors can pick up a picnic basket full of regional delicacies from the castle restaurant and take a blanket up to the Kapfensteiner Kogel. You can enjoy your picnic wither on the grass or at one of the tables. Don’t forget to taste the vineyard’s wine as part of your picnic.
Schloss Kapfenstein is also part of the Styrian Castle Route, which connects various castles and palaces in the east and south of Styria. These edifices are witnesses to great eras and host a wide range of cultural events.
