River Mur Cycle Trail
From the Tauern to Styrian Wine and Spa Country
Perhaps the most scenically diverse river cycle trail, the River Mur Cycle Trail begins in Lungau in the federal state of Salzburg in Hohe Tauern National Park. Characterised by diverse, constantly changing scenery, the trail slopes gently downhill. it leads to a number of high-quality culinary establishments on the banks of the Mur, where you can experience the famous Styrian hospitality.
The huge number of natural experiences along the cycle trail allow you to forget the daily grind and let your troubles fade away. How could it be otherwise when rolling hills, mountain pastures and lakes accompany you along the entire way. But that’s not all: historic little towns such as Tamsweg, Murau, Judenburg, Leoben and the market town of Bruck an der Mur offer an impressive range of culinary and cultural options and are ideal places to stop off and relax. North of Graz, in the area around the romantically located town of Frohnleiten, a wide variety of excursion destinations and annual events offer an exciting balance to your active holiday. Old farms, orchards and high rock faces are a constant reminder of just how unique this cycle tour is. The Lurgrotte, Austria’s oldest active dripstone cave, and Stübing Open-Air Museum are just a few of the region’s highlights.
Upon arrival in Graz, the cultural, epicurean capital, home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Old Town and Eggenberg Palace – numerous sights await those who love culture. There are plenty of historical sites to discover around the clock tower. It is these places that give the town its unique charm with their red roofs. Enlivened by the city, the River Mur Cycle Trail continues south to discover Mediterranean flair. Romantic vineyards, hot springs, pumpkins fields and orchards define the landscape south of Graz. Relax in one of the two thermal spas in the Parktherme in Bad Radkersburg. The final stage leads over the border to Slovenia and on to Legrad in Croatia. You will experience the exciting history of the development of the border region between Austria, Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia until the Mur converges with the Drava.
